TRAIL RATINGS

I’ve rated the trail based on a possible 5 stars. I’ve looked at all the things that compose a great trail system. Structure, dirt, features, navigability, location, access, size and overall feel is what I’ve evaluated. If you have any questions about ratings or have ideas for ratings or would like to submit a rating of your local area please let me know.

Bend, OR: star star star star star

What can I say, it’s hard not to give your hometown 5 stars. Here’s the thing, mountain biking in Bend is amazing. There are endless miles of single track for all ability levels. Most trails are XC oriented, but the free ride scene is very much alive with fun features all around. In addition, Central Oregon Trail Alliance (COTA) continues to develop and add new trails yearly. Most trails are just a few miles from town and those you need to drive to are well worth the gas money. Trails are well marked and easy to navigate. Things can get a little dusty in the late summer, but just go up higher in elevation and the good stuff is aplenty. Bend has several bike shops, breweries, reasonable lodging and decent nightlife. Bend was voted the greatest mountain bike town in the US by Mountain Bike Action in 2009. If you love to ride come to Bend, you will not be disappointed.

Black Rock Mountain Bike Trails: star star star star star half

Location: 3 miles west of Falls City, OR (Falls City is located about 35 miles SW of Salem, OR)

Black Rock is a very dear place to me due to the fact that I’ve met my two best riding buddies there (What up Steve and Tom?). Black Rock is a free ride area with lots and lots of well built ladders, drops, gaps, skinnys and flowing single track. The Black Rock Mountain Bike Association (BRMBA) has done an exemplary job in their trail construction. Everything is nicely engineered and maintained. There is something for all skill levels and this is a great place to progress and build confidence. Black Rock is in the coast range of Oregon and has pretty much perfect dirt, seriously, it’s awesome. The reasons for not having 5 stars is it’s location and you are not allowed to shuttle; however, the push up isn’t all that bad and well worth it. If free riding is your thing, ride Black Rock and at the end of the day you will have a giant smile on your face, I guarantee it!
